Do you ever buy a protein powder thinking it’s going to be something amazing and then you open it and can’t hardly gag it down? When I was battling all my digestive issues, I started using a medical food shake and it was so terrible – gagging terrible. But I was determined to get better so I would plug my nose, hold my breath, and drink it as fast as I could.
Fast forward to now, I’ve been trying protein powders for years – some I’ve had one scoop and tossed, some I would fall in love with, and some were so/so. I’m very, very picky about my protein powder – I can NOT handle chalky texture, it has to have high quality, minimal ingredients and it has to actually taste good.
I compiled my top 5 protein powders (in no particular order) here for a quick guide to finding one you’ll love! I’m a big believer in changing it up all the time… give your body something new!
Ascent Protein – This is a great quality protein! They have both a plant based and a whey protein option. I love this one because it mixes great – like add to a shaker cup with some water and bam. You’ve got 25g of protein.
Shakeology – I wouldn’t really classify this as a protein powder – it’s more of a food… They do market it as a “super food” which they aren’t wrong. It’s packed full of all kinds of nutrients – unlike these others that are just strictly protein.
Equip Protein – This is a new one I’ve just tried. I tried the salted caramel in my coffee and I immediately texted my sisters that they HAD to order some of this. I’m not one who usually likes to mess with my coffee (I’m a plain black kinda gal) but dang, this is a MUST have if you like a little creamer in your coffee – this will take care of that and make it healthy! This one packs 21 grams of protein per scoop.
Active Stacks – this one you can find in Walgreens… at least you used to be able too. I liked that option so I didn’t have to wait for something to ship to your house. This is a collagen mixture protein – so its not made of whey making it dairy free. This one is 22 grams of protein and it mixes very well. Its not chalky or chunky. They added in some glycine in this as well so its really good for your joints.
Just Ingredients – I love this protein because its not only smooth, it also gives you a variety of sources of protein. You’re getting 5 different types of protein. Its not just a whey protein…. you’re getting pumpkin seed protein, chia seeds, a pea protein, collagen AND the whey. I love this brand because they really focus on real, whole foods and quality ingredients.
